We all know that the Abbott government’s first budget is going to be painful, but do the cuts really have to be announced in such bad taste?

On the weekend I was watching the news and hearing about changes to the disability pension, changes that will have a terrible impact on young disabled people around the country.

Yes it’s true, these people want to go back to work, but they do not deserve to be forced into a role that they find humiliating and derogatory. As their disability shows, they have suffered enough already.

However, Abbott is determined to see those with a disability suffer further to lessen any financial impact on those his government supports. These would be the billionaires, the insurance companies, the lobbyist pals with their slush funds and dodgy donations etc.

For someone who likes his military analogies, kicking those who are down seems to me to be the exact opposite of what has become known as the ANZAC Spirit. I thought the way of the Aussie Digger was to give a helping hand and put yourself on the line to help a fellow countryman.

Alas it seems under Abbott that gesture has instead turned into kicking sand in your fallen diggers face, but only after you’ve picked their pocket.

As Un-Australian as this is, and as distasteful as this Coalition policy is, what I found gut-wrenchingly sickening and in the height of poor taste is what Abbott was doing on the day this news was intentionally leaked by the government.

Abbott was attending an official reception held at the Museum of Contemporary Art for the athletes of the Australian Winter Olympic Team. Abbott was there to celebrate the achievements of 71 Olympians at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia this February-March.

11 of these remarkable athletes were Paralympians.

As Abbott congratulated these remarkable athletes with disabilities, his government was leaking plans to punish others like them, and force them into demoralising work.

This is clearly a government with no moral compass at all.

We are about to face a budget that is likely to be extremely harsh and hurt many Australians. At the same time we have a Prime Minister shaking the hands of disabled athletes while the news of him attacking the disability pension is announced, and a Treasurer and Finance Minister celebrating with cigars as most of the country braces itself for massive impact of the budget they created.

Meanwhile back in the electorate Tony Abbott shares with NSW Premier Mike Baird things are heating up care of the ICAC hearings.

A man has been brought before ICAC to explain dodgy donations and his links to allegations of further slush funds used to fund Liberal campaigns.

That man is John Caputo and he is a former Mayor of Warringah.

John "Don't knock the dye job" Caputo

John “Don’t knock the dye job” Caputo

Caputo has admitted to giving Chris Hartcher cheques that were made out to the Liberal Party. Hartcher as we all know is the disgraced former NSW Energy Minister who was forced to resign after ICAC revelations and a police raid on his electorate office.

Caputo’s alleged associate, an accountant by the name of Timothy Trumbull is alleged to have organised donations that were above the legal cap on political donations to be put through his staff members, in an alleged act of fraud. To make matters even more absurd his staff were backpackers and were ineligible to vote.

Hartcher allegedly used these funds months later after laundering the money through a trust account and then placed into a slush fund.

Caputo has a bit of history behind him as well.

Media personality Wendy Harmer who is a resident of the electorate has had some experience with Mr Caputo, and it’s safe to assume that she’s not his biggest fan.

Back in 1997 during a campaign Wendy received something that she wishes she hadn’t.

What she actually received was a picture of heiress Juanita Nielsen who was missing and presumed murdered. The picture Wendy received was covered in what Wendy assumed to be blood.

Fearing it to be a death threat she contacted police and was interviewed and the evidence taken, but alas she heard nothing back from police on the matter, swept under the carpet it seems.

Later when Wendy stated that she thought real estate agents should not be allowed on council, something I would have thought was stating the bleeding obvious, she was threatened with legal action. Mr Caputo is a director of First National Real Estate Dee Why, a real estate agency that employs many of the Caputo family.

Mr Caputo was the Deputy of Warringah Mayor Darren Jones.

Both of these men were at the forefront of another local dispute.

Mark Humphreys was a developer in the area went to ICAC in 2001 with allegations that he was being asked to pay bribes in order to have development passed through council.

In April 2002 Greens MP Lee Rhiannon claimed Humphreys had made a statement to “relevant authorities alleging that the criminal conduct was on the part of Darren Jones, another senior councillor and the brother of that councillor”. Rhiannon claimed that Humphreys alleged that he had been asked by the brother of one of the councillors to pay $80,000 and $50,000 in bribes in order that his development applications for property in Ocean Grove, Collaroy, and Francis Street, Dee Why, be approved.

John Caputo’s brother Mark is reportedly a property developer, and it would seem many of Caputo’s family are in the real estate industry.

Humphreys’s application ended up being rejected by the council and despite an appeal to the Land and Environment Court never got off the ground. Humphreys later sold the property.

In regards to the property sale, Lee Rhiannon later said:

“It was purchased by associates of Mayor Jones and people who I understand to be Liberal Party supporters.

“Last year the new owners submitted the new development application for 26 Ocean Grove. Despite the proposed development being worse than the original, Jones and his majority faction moved to approve the development. “Councillor John Caputo declared a pecuniary interest in the application. Many objectors to this development have alleged that they have been subject led to intimidation and harassment.”

Mark Humphreys later committed suicide.

An address to State Parliament from Lee Rhiannon on other matters involving John Caputo and Darren Jones can be read here.

Despite all of this and more, John Caputo does still have a few fans out there who clearly admire his way of doing things.

ooooh baby I love your way....

ooooh baby I love your way….

Two of his biggest fans are none other than Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and the shiny new NSW Premier Mike Baird.

Mr Caputo is a committee member of Mr Abbott’s Warringah federal electorate conference and vice-president of Mr Baird’s Manly state electoral conference.

Prominent amongst his responsibilities is the raising of campaign funds.

Tony Abbott is yet to answer queries on, or comment on the details surrounding ICAC revelations concerning the Warringah Club and their less than transparent approach to dealing with donations to his campaign.

Mike Baird has refused to answer questions in Parliament regarding dodgy donations from companies associated with Roger Massy-Greene that were undeclared and came shortly before Massy-Greene was given a lucrative consulting contract and a tasty board appointment.

On top of this we have a guy implicated in all manner of dodgy goings on at council, and who gave a disgraced Liberal MP extremely dodgy cheques to launder through a trust account and put in a slush fund, cheques that aren’t even made out to him and have come from backpackers.

And this guy, John Caputo raises campaign funds for both our Prime Minister and Premier.

If there is one thing that is clear it is that the campaign donation records of both Abbott and Baird need to be gone through with a fine tooth auditors comb.

Tony pointing out to Mike which donation records to delete from the ledger?

Tony pointing out to Mike which donation records to delete from the ledger?

It seems ironic that we have a Royal Commission into unions starting soon that is seen as a desperate attempt to smear the Labor Party and find slush funds.

Meanwhile ICAC is finding Liberal Party slush funds all over the place and is showing the current Liberal Party to be the most corrupt political party in Australia’s history.

Let us not also forget that slush funds are not always about political elections, sometimes they are about political assassinations.

Perhaps Australia’s most notorious slush fund was a fund run by Tony Abbott himself, and was set up to destroy the One Nation Party and Pauline Hanson. Abbott sought to deny the country of the democratic process by killing off One Nation and denying us the chance to vote against them.

Despite One Nations founders ending up in jail based on falsehoods, Tony Abbott proved himself a failure and One Nations founders were released from prison and both the party and Pauline Hanson lived to fight another day.

Now Abbott finds himself failing to be able to explain serious allegations involving his campaign funding and those who provide it as he leads a political party that has failed in every aspect and has proven itself to be corrupt right through to its core. In fact some would say that the current Liberal Party is destroying the credibility of government in this country.

As Prime Minister Tony Abbott has turned out to be the leader of a Coalition Of Corruption who was elected based on lies and promises he has broken in his first budget.

The next election cannot come soon enough.

  1. Warringah, Real Estate Agent, reminds me wasn’t Joe Hockey’s mum & dad real agency business somewhere nearby umm Naremburn that’s it. I wonder if they all knew one another?

  2. Good work Peter. The Liberals are a very inbred lot really. They all socialise in the same circles, marry off their kids within such circles & would see nothing wrong in scratching one another’s backs. Anything to perpetuate the myth of their superiority & born-to-rule above-the-law mentality.

Despicable people. Hope they all end up in gaol but somehow I doubt it.

  3. Great Article, I am of the opinion this Prime Minister is exercising a total abuse of power, he was not elected to turn our economy on its head nor disrupt the lives of millions of Australians for policies that only look after the big end of town. Abbotts proposed massive infrastructure spend, is more of a con. Our Labor opposition member Anthony Albanese should be listened to as he is the only creditable politician that can be trusted with implementing the big public infrastructure this country requires. He gets the picture, he is honest and extremely trustworthy. Abbott does not get the picture and is totally dishonest and untrustworthy. The Senate should block this budget and call for fresh elections.
