Back in December 2012 I wrote an article on the abhorrent Puppy Farm business that supplies many of our pet stores.

Since then very little has been done to stop this cruel and heartless treatment of animals that are supposed to be man’s best friend.

When I say very little, I am not referring to organisations such as Oscars Law who work tirelessly in attempts to give puppies a decent life and shut down the puppy farms, nor am I referring to the RSPCA whose work is irreplaceable, I’m referring to politicians.

Until now that is.

There are political parties that know how to talk the talk, but when it comes to walking the walk have so far done nothing substantial to bring an end to this despicable industry. Parties who would claim to be progressive in this area who despite being a part of a small group holding the balance of power in some states have done nothing at all to use their power to put forward a policy in this area and see it implemented. For all the posturing, political spin and long faces it has been left up to groups like Oscars Law to do the heavy lifting.

Thankfully there is still a progressive political party that thinks actions speak louder than words and is ready to push forward with policy in order to make a difference rather than talk about one.

The Victorian branch of the Labor Party has announced this week policy that intended to smash the puppy farm model and support respected breeders.

Puppy-Farm

Victorian Labor has announced that they will limit the maximum number of female breeding dogs in domestic facilities to ten by 2020, This is not just some hollow promise either that cannot be policed. The Labor Party will back that up with an additional $5 Million funding for the RSPCA team to increase their inspection capabilities, ensuring that illegal puppy farms are shut down and their operators held to account, to assist in this task new right-of-entry powers will be put in place for the inspectors.

There will be a five-litter limit put in place for breeders to ensure there are no loopholes and to attempt to ensure that animals are not held in overcrowded conditions. Mandatory vet checks will also help to ensure that animals are correctly fed, looked after and are not mistreated.

Pet stores will face restrictions also that will only allow them to buy from reputable sources which will shut down the puppy farms business model.

Below is a link to the email from Daniel Andrews with this most welcome announcement.

Daniel Andrews email re Puppy Farms

If you don’t know a great deal about puppy farms, then check out the video below from the team at The Project, and a warning that some might find some footage disturbing.

Although the footage above is depressing at least there is some good news now that we will see a political push to put an end to this cruelty.

If you want to know more, check out the Oscars Law website, they are the experts in this field.

Congratulations to Daniel Andrews, Jaala Pulford and the Victorian Labor Party for leading the charge and it is great to know that the Labor Party in other states are looking to adopt this policy also.

I hope other parties support Labor’s Policy to end this once and for all.

5 thoughts on “Diamond Dogs – Labor takes the fight to puppy farm operators

  1. there is no way you can police backyard breeders, and why do we have to wait until 2020. Whats wrong with doing all this within the first 12 months of term. No says Labour will even be in power in 2020 so it just seem like a vote catcher to me

  2. Policing backyard breeders is as simple as a person with authority to attend the breeder’s home, ask for certification and if none can be produced; remove the animals and issue a whopping great fine. It would cause employment and a safer system for the animals who are merely breeding machine money makers for their “owners”. They mostly advertise in local papers and on websites like gumtree. Depends on how hard the authorities want to police this and whether or not they figure the revenue raised from such a scheme is worth it in the end. It always boils down to the bottom dollar…

  3. 5 litters and waiting until 2020 is disgusting – there should be NO puppy farms and it should come into affect immediately plus this should be Australiawide.

  4. Yep, it should be much sooner. however having legislation drafted into law can be quite time consuming I understand, and it is far better than the nothing that is in place now…
Once in place I hope it gets tightened up further
