Regular readers of my articles will know that I am passionate about Labor Party reform and seeing the influences of the old McDonald (not the Ol’ McDonald with a farm), Tripodi and Obeid factions cut out like the cancer they are. Another aspect that see’s my blood start to boil is the stacking of branches to drag someone over the pre-selection line that is incapable of doing it on their own merits.

One NSW Member of Parliament that has passed their use by date is the Labor Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay, and she is certainly one ticks all the wrong boxes.

There is a pre-selection battle about to be waged in the safe Labor seat of Wollongong between an up and coming Labor candidate Paul Scully and the woman who has been connected to almost every scandal that has befallen the NSW Labor Party Noreen Hay.

Noreen is seen by many as the last of the Eddie Obeid and Joe Tripodi camp to still hold a seat and many still scratch their heads as to why she is still there.

With so many Liberal Party members not contesting the NSW election thanks to ICAC revelations one would think that NSW Labor would be running a country mile from corruption connections and controversy.

In the pre-selection process for the March 2014 election candidates we have seen branch stacking running rampant while Sussex St turns an intentional blind eye, the pre-selection of domestic violence apologists, and the decisions of the Candidate Review Committee would make one wonder what someone would have to do to be knocked back for endorsement.

Last weekend Labor Victoria won a historic victory over a Coalition government in their first term, in NSW we too have a Coalition government in their first term. A Coalition that has lost a Premier due to ICAC evidence, and a Coalition that has destroyed the workers compensation rights of hundreds of thousands at the behest of their insurance lobbyist mates that were formerly on the Liberal Party State Executive, and a Coalition that has privatised or cut many other services to the bone including health transport and education.

Still what NSW State Secretary Jamie Clements calls leadership we have a better chance of winning the World Cup than winning the March State Election.

There have been allegations of Sussex St interference in the Wollongong pre-selection in a bid to protect Noreen Hay, something that has bewildered most. In fact many I have spoken with have wondered why anyone would not be glad to see the back of her if they had the Party’s best interests in mind rather than their own.

As the battle for the pre-selection heats up it has been alleged that there may be as many as 42 new members suddenly in the Kiera branch, it has been claimed these are supporters of Noreen. Recently Fairfax investigated these claims and actually went knocking on doors. They found supporters of Hay living on premises they claimed to have moved out of.

I wonder how these members will be dealt with under the watch of Jamie Clements. I would expel them myself, but we will see what happens…

There are also allegations of approximately eight prior Labor members who have not been members for a couple of years now being granted continuity of their membership for re-joining, and this continuity allows them to vote for Noreen in a pre-selection.

It would seem Sussex St is pulling all sorts of strings for Noreen.

We have controversial pre-selections coming up in Auburn as well as Wollongong and both appear to involve political favours and branch stacking.

However it will take more than controversy to finally rid the Labor Party of a stain like Noreen Hay. It takes an Administration Committee where the committee members from the Right are willing to do what is right for the Party rather than tow the factional line. It will take a Candidate Review Committee that takes their job seriously and doesn’t bow to outside pressure. However it will also take a State Secretary that has a bit of courage and one that makes a decision that they will not allow the tail to wag the dog. Alas, these are all things I fear NSW Labor lacks currently.

Noreen herself is no stranger to controversy, it’s reasonable to suggest that controversy has courted Noreen her entire political career.

Before defecting to Labor’s Right Faction where she did the bidding of Obeid and Tripodi she was sure to publicly back Ian Macdonald in as a Minister. Now of course Macdonald and Obeid are facing criminal charges.

Noreen was elected as the boss of the Right Faction or Centre Unity after Nathan Rees as Premier got rid of Obeid, Tripodi and Macdonald and eventually dumped Noreen as a Parliamentary Secretary. If she succeeds in remaining in Parliament for another term she will be the last MP still standing that backed the dumping of Nathan Rees as leader after he declared war on all of the MP’s who later destroyed the Party’s reputation via ICAC.

One of the biggest scandals to ever hit the NSW Labor Party was the corruption scandal that engulfed Wollongong Council. It was corruption on a grand scale with ICAC recommending 139 criminal charges after their two-year investigation.

There in the centre of it all was Noreen Hay.

The scandal revolved around bribery and sex for development approvals.

By the end it all the scandal had claimed the scalps of several from senior management of Wollongong Council, four Labor Councillors and several developers.

Noreen at the time of the ICAC hearings was Parliamentary Secretary for Health, until Premier Morris Iemma was forced to stand her down.

Iemma stood Noreen down after she admitted before ICAC to lobbying Labor Councillors on behalf of Frank Vellar one of the developer scalps that the scandal claimed. Vellar was particularly close Noreen, as close as a $20K donation to her campaign gets you at any rate. Just to show her how much he appreciated her friendship Vellar also supplied Noreen a campaign office rent-free for her 2007 campaign.

However once ICAC came to the miraculous decision that Noreen was not a person of interest Iemma was awfully quick to back down to his factional masters and reinstate Noreen as Parliamentary Secretary, a position she held until Nathan Rees crashed Centre Unity’s Party, something he would eventually pay a heavy price for.

In 2008 when 4 Corners investigated the Wollongong scandal Sarah Ferguson asked Noreen about her place in the system of corruption that Ferguson claimed had

“poisoned the Party from its head to its grassroots”

Noreen replied in her trademark arrogant tone

“I work within the system that exists”

There has never been a better time for NSW Labor to turn a new page, however under the current management we seem incapable.

Jamie Clements has claimed to have stayed away from the Wollongong pre-selection and has stated;

“I never lefted a finger or picked up the phone to assist Noreen Hay’s campaign”

However he would not enter into a discussion on who did assist Hay from Sussex St or any disciplinary measures that will result from it.

For the Party’s leader John Robertson it must be a source of constant frustration. However if the Party cannot win an election with 10 Liberal members forced out due to ICAC he need not take it to heart, the problem is with Party Headquarters not the front line.

Some have even suggested that this election is being deliberately tossed to make way for the future leader of the NSW Labor Party to be able to make a move midway through next term.

The real joke is, the person I speak of hasn’t even been elected yet.

Welcome to the Jamie Clements Party.

Formerly the proud NSW Labor Party.

  1. I think Jamie is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t in your eyes Peter. There is a duly elected body in NSW Labor called the credentials committee is there not? and on this committee sit members from the left faction and from the right faction do they not? Surely it would be improper for Jamie Clements to prejudge the outcome of their processes regarding the credentialling of pre-selectors? I know from personal experience that the left don’t take a backward step in matters such as these.

  2. Until Labour in NSW expels all associated with Sussex st & also removes Robinson who is a lousy leader cleans out anyone associated with the NSW right & starts again it will go nowhere.
You have to wonder how thick these people are

  3. dear Noreen went from over 14,000 majority last state election to a shady 600 odd votes verses the now Wollongong independent Mayor …..I mention shady , votes missing , no proof …..Why the lost Labor head office still stick up for ….no one with any sense can figure out …common knowledge that a track was worn from her parliamentary office to Obeid/ Tripodi et al ……she ahs been a totally lost cause for Wollongong since the last election ….very smelly , very very smelly .

  4. Yes there is, however Noreen is a sitting MP and therefore would not have to go through that committee

The left are drastically outnumbered in the admin committee, and it would appear that the candidate review committee is easily pressured, why else would they endorse a property developer whose business partner is Carmine Tripodi?

I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong in regards to Jamie however at every opportunity thus far he has failed and done so miserably, I would take my hat off to him if he took a stand. There are plenty of high profile people within the Party who would support him if he decided to take a stand, however he appears to be choosing a different path and backing the pseudo-reforms of those with the most to lose in a real reform.

  5. Sorry John, I forgot to point out, the credentials committee decide on whether someone is allowed to vote in a pre-selection. They check the credentials of members, such as address number of meetings attended etc
It is the candidate review committee that determines the suitability of a candidate

  6. Please…….it can’t be Noreen Hay herself indulging in sex for development approvals?

I just vomited a bit in my mouth.

  7. Well this fills me with hope for a Labor win in 2015 (haha), as a resident of Wollongong and an injured worker I am way beyond caring about the inner going ons of the NSW ALP – we desperately need to get rid of the baird government to save our state from the privateers and I will be helping NSW Labor any way I can. As for Noreen in her defense, talk to the average punter that has needed her help – she has always been good at that.

  8. Perhaps it’s time for a federal intervention. I seem to recall the Victorian ALP was a basket case until, was it Gough, intervened.

  9. Just thought I’d mention that it’s Paul Scully not Philip.

  10. Her daughter Alison was hooked up with Eric Roozendael. She had a great time in his office. Free clothes from his wifes cards, worked from home .The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with this lot. They are all a stain and need to go! Get on ya broomsticks and flock off!

  11. Unfortunately, she’s in. ………same old Sussex street gang wins again.

Bwahahaha FFS where’s the like button?

  13. You can suspend people if there’s a stench about them, but expel them without due recourse and they lawyer up. Why do you think Belinda Neal still wafts about the place?

  14. as a long time Labor person …no NO .. I will not vote for N.HAY …..With this decision to back Hay ..it is obvious Robbo and Sussex St are still under the impression that REAL people do not think they do not still have the STENCH OF CORRUPTION ….the Libs are the same ..NSW and Australian politics just TOTALLY STINK
