Tony Abbott is a Prime Minister that receives a lot of criticism for a lot of things from a lot of people a lot of the time.

I know this because I am one of those who often dishes out that criticism.

Last Friday most Australians woke to the horrific news that flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had been shot down by a surface to air missile over the Ukraine with 37 of the 298 passengers on board being from Australia.

This is clearly an immensely significant event, and given that those evidently bearing responsibility for the missile and its launch are backed by Russia it is a matter that has to be dealt with both carefully and appropriately.

Amongst all this lie the remains of 37 Australians

Amongst all this lie the remains of 37 Australians

Bearing this in mind it needs to be remembered that until an independent investigation can be undertaken and completed and all of the facts have been determined and assessed, nothing is absolutely certain, even despite overwhelming circumstantial evidence.

Given the fact that we are dealing with one of the world’s greatest super-powers, and one that is highly volatile and unpredictable, and also that no investigation of the site has even commenced, let alone concluded, I think that Tony Abbott’s handling of the situation warrants discussion. Particularly given his language and tone towards Russia and President Vladimir Putin has been quite strong and confrontational.

So, in the great spirit of giving credit where credit is due, I have to say that the way Tony Abbott has handled the situation thus far has been superb, quite exceptional in fact.

It is particularly admirable considering that we are talking about Russia. That fact alone must make it tempting to walk the careful path of waiting for absolute certainty and not jumping to conclusions and swimming out beyond our depth.

To his immense credit Tony Abbott  has chosen to prioritize taking a stand for the Australian victims and their families and put that stand ahead of international diplomacy.

For those Australians that have lost loved ones in this catastrophe this may not be of any comfort now, however I’m confident that when they look back at a later stage they will appreciate that our Prime Minister was one who chose to call it as we all see it and not piss-fart about with formalities and cite international red tape.

Diplomacy is a wonderful thing, however when the evidence is as strong as it is in this case, I’m sure glad to see Abbott is not mincing his words and procrastinating while Pro-Russian rebel forces steal the wallets and jewellery off the bodies of dead Australians in a field.

Saying all the right words

Saying all the right words

As we all know diplomacy and talk can often work at an extremely slow pace and for those who are awaiting justice this must feel excruciatingly unfair.

Just ask anyone living on the Gaza Strip or in Syria and they’ll tell you how long the wait for justice and international action can be via diplomacy.

This is why I agree with Tony Abbott’s decision to not further compound the anguish of loved ones of the deceased and instead do all that is possible to bring about a thorough investigation as soon as possible no matter who that pisses off.

I am proud that as a nation we have taken such a strong position on this matter and hope that it continues.

There are those who say that we cannot blame Russia until all of the evidence is in and I understand that position.

However as Tony Abbott discussed on Sunday morning on the ABC’s Insiders, the behavior of the soviet backed rebel forces who are in control of the crash site/crime scene is something that Russia is in a position to influence, and their failure to do so is inhumane.

So to Tony Abbott I say, “keep up the good fight on this matter, the victims deserve nothing less”

To those of you wondering whether my site has been hacked and someone else has written this, absolutely not, I always call it as I see it, and as I see it in this instance I cannot fault Abbott’s performance as our Prime Minister.

I also thought that in fairness and given the importance of the subject it was something I should write about.

However, normal service will resume shortly…

  1. TA saying the right words… Even when he says them twice

  2. please Peter, share the “overwhelming circumstantial evidence” … i have seen nothing i would consider to be anything like “overwhelming circumstantial evidence” in the many and varies web sources i have viewed.

please do share this with the world … for so far as i can determine, not many commentators are making this claim (you will have to forgive my not considering Murdoch media inc. Fox, to be credible sources). you may have a world exclusive here …

  3. Well blaming Russia seems premature. Yelling at people and demanding what you want doesn’t really get you anywhere. Putin would view Australia as an annoying mosquito. A plane was shot down over a country that isn’t ours, the plane wasn’t from here, 30 odd unfortunate Australians were killed because they were passengers on the plane. So yelling and demanding tends to get ignored.

  4. There is zero evidence Russia had anything to do with it and Abbott has been his same old moron clown. Here he is with 153 hostages on the high seas whose existence he fails to acknowledge and whose plight he will not allow to be disclosed and he has the frigging gall to demand that Putin do something he has nothing personally to do with.

It’s the same racist double standards being applied by you as it is the double standards being applied by Abbott, a man hated by most of the country, who came out ranting as usual.
And not one word from Abbott or Shorten about the massacre in Gaza, just the usual cheering support for the facist criminal statelet.

Honest to god this is Murdoch style crap.

  5. mmm….maybe I have been reading different reports, I have found abbott to be childish and hypocritical with his responses and the “my daughters flew on the MH17” offensive – it’s not all about you abbott. “Soviet backed” – really, sadly Russia is now a capitalist country – yet the cold war rhetoric remains. I’m with owen1967 on this one.

  6. This sort of crap from the man who has spent years delivering evidence about the corruption of the Ashby and Jackson cases should not be written.

Justice for all means waiting for the evidence, not jerking the knees.

  7. There has been widespread reporting that the Ukraine has the same weaponry just as there was widespread coverage last last year when the crisis started despite what that article you put a link to says.

In fact, most of what that article says will definitely not be reported by the main stream media I have seen reported numerous times and that is the bulk of the article….

The fact is the area and crash site is currently being controlled by Russian backed rebels. These are the people disturbing a crime scene, these are the people looting from dead bodies, these are the people firing live ammunition to intimidate any efforts of an investigation, and these are the people that Russia could threaten to stop supplying with weapons, ammunition and training.

This is what we know for sure and this is why Russia deserves to be condemned whatever ones opinion on whether or not the rebels they back fired any missile.

  8. It is a Democracy Pete, although Abbott would deprive us of it if he could however, you need not make a case for your pro Abbot thoughts, you are entitled.
My only comment in the negative…can I believe his sincerity, what’s in it for Abbott? it is so so out of character for the mongrel. Govt polls are shite, his own more so. That is why I have the negative.
    Cheers.

  9. Wixxy, yes the ABC Insiders interview was good, however, when you watch the sixty minutes interview, you may become suspicious about how contrived or dare I say even scripted they were. The similarity between the two appeared more than coincidental, the tone, the style the answers, the similarity was difficult to ignore.

For example “You are very angry” was asked in both interviews.

  10. Hear hear on that! This is the only time I’ve ever agreed with Abbott. I would go step further and say that Putin is responsible for this – he is the criminal, he is the murderer. Putin is a terrorist.

  11. Above all though, this is yet another case of trashing the presumption of innocence

  12. Abbott, as he said of Putin, is making all the right noises.
He did that a lot over the last few years, sounded good. Look what’s happened there, did he mean any of it?
A media despairing of its own creation has grabbed at this incident & suddenly it’s back to pre August ’13 with uncritical adulation spewing out of the screens.
Getting into Trollspeak, “I don’t always agree with Marilyn but…” Abbott’s Shit Happens style comments, washing his hands of Sri Lankan issues are forgotten & the matter of those currently in peril on the sea seems to’ve gone, to the extent that it was ever there.
Abbott as always is doing this for himself & as always he’s being allowed to get away with it.

  13. It’s very easy to say the right words when you have a plethora of highly paid spin doctors at your disposal.

  14. A massive amount of spin doctors indeed… so much for small government

  15. Abbott is a packaged performer. he is semi scripted, but with a poor memory for detail (or just lazy) he requires prompting, as an actor does from the wings,
The hearing device he is often seen wearing in live studio i/v’s or media stops, is not there as a decoration or because he is hard of hearing.
A die hard Abbott supporter tried to tell me it was a studio requirement he wear the hearing aid to hear the interviewer clearly and listeners calls. What arrant nonsense. With nearly 40 yrs broadcasting experience, I am not aware of any studio so hard up they can’t afford a decent set of headphones (cans), particularly when the guest is the countries PM.
Amazing, even his red neck dilbury, thick followers join in the spin.
Why does he insist in doing so many recorded interviews, particularly from those he suspects will ask questions he would rather ignore?
Joe Cocker had the answer to that one… With A Little Help Of My Friends. i would substitute ‘a little’ with ‘a lot’

  16. Reporter bought out by words, shame, you should know better! And now that information is surfacing that points to Ukrainian forces, forces backed by the US, then we may also conclude that the only reason Abbott is pointing the finger without evidence and prior to an investigation may have it’s place in the alliance we have with the USA; not based on care for citizens.

Again shame on you for being duped so easily.

    Ivor

  17. Its funny how people who say I jumped in too early and should have waited for an investigation to finish are quite happy to take seriously reports that point the finger at Ukraine without waiting for an investigation to even start.
I can understand why these people think I should be ashamed, as clearly hypocrisy is something to be proud of in their minds

  18. Wixxy, Please explain why the Malaysian and Dutch delegations have been into the site, collected the flight recorders, taken responsibility for the trainload of deceased, and are now on their way back to their respective countries. Australian delegation enjoying Ukraine hospitality and Tony Abbott still blowing suppositories out his arse.

  19. Peter, in the things you look into you tend to clear up unanswered questions. With the MH17 tragedy, retrieving the victims remains and then an impartial investigation to find who caused this should have been the most important first steps.
From Abbott,s first speech in parliament, placing the blame squarely on Putin with no evidence, politics have been No 1 on the agenda.
Please find why Putin was blamed so early, find the exact reason the Australian delegation is not yet on site, and find why this whole incident is being buried in a thick layer of propaganda and spin.

  20. I shouldn’t need to explain that, my post was before any of that happened

  21. Not always, I often just have a piss and moan about politicians behaviour or bad policy.
I thought it was apt to point out that I thought Abbott was doing a good job for once in my humble opinion.
It was not saying that I have any authority on the subject, nor is it something I intend to keep writing on.
I am not sorry that my opinion differs from anyone elses because that is what makes us all different.
There is more than enough propaganda, spin and utter bullshit on both sides of this argument
People may want to disect my opinion on this matter and compare it with my opinions on other matters, but the fact remains that this matter is not like the HSU matter, no matter what people think, nor is it like any other matter I have written about previously.
People are free to have whatever opinion they like, but please allow me the freedom to have mine also

  22. Didn’t last long Pete. We now have “Operation Bringing them Home” to repatriate the victims’ bodies.

  23. Can’t help feeling we’re being done over again
Abbott and bishop may be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons
Now Abbott can confront Putin and Bishop can confront the Russians in the UN how about they confront the Egyptians about the journalists held hostage
There are three journalist held without a real charges or any chance of justice in an Egyptian prison
Peter Greste has a family they are terrified for his chances of surviving the the horrors of the Egyptian prison system
His elderly parents and other relatives grieve for him they want him back
Peter Greste Operation Bring Them Back to their loved ones

  24. Sorry, Wixxy – but Sniveling Grub Abbott is certainly not ‘our’ Prime Minister – at least, not in this house.

However, it’s interesting how the Abbott junta has made full use of Australia’s position on the UN Security Council, something which Labor lobbied for – and won – despite the howls from The Sniveling Grub and the wingnut brigade. Who cried that any attempt of obtaining it was a waste of time and money.

It’s also worth noting that while the Australian media are slurping Abbott like there’s no tomorrow, his carefully contrived rhetoric is being virtually ignored by the rest of the world.

When Abbott snivelied and stumbled and driveled his way through the MH17 incident at a press conference on Monday morning, I seriously believed he was drunk again.

Does anyone seriously believe that Abbott’s dickless posturing in front of Rupert’s rubes is making the Russians tremble in their reddened-snow-covered boots? To anyone except a female protestor or a physically tiny, harmless woman whom he’s pinned against a wall, Tony Abbott is as threatening as a limp lettuce leaf.

Abbott hasn’t been particularly brave – in fact, he’s been like a schoolchild pulling faces at an errant child while standing behind the principal (John Kerry), who is lecturing said errant child.

The reprehensible Abbott junta needed a massive distraction from their outrageous incompetence, and they’re using the 28 dead people on MH17 to get one.

No, Wixxy; I’m afraid The Grub That Roared will never be “our” Prime Minister.

  25. No follow up? Still feeling the same? Abbott is still milking this for what it is worth and we still don’t know who did it. You want to try reading the stories as told from the locals points of view and ask them if there was any looting going on. No credit given to the voluneers who marked out where the bodies were and made shrines etc out of respect for the dead. This article was very dissappointing.
